On April 30th, Tan Tieniu, Secretary of the CPC NJU Committee and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), engaged in a Fireside Chat with Phil Baty, Chief Global Affairs Officer of Times Higher Education, on the theme of "Empowering Graduates: A Pathway to Sustainable Employment." The talk looked at the critical intersection between education and employability, focusing on strategies to empower graduates for sustainable career success. With a lens on the Chinese higher education landscape, the discussion traversee key themes including teaching excellence, adaptation to the digital age, academia-industry collaboration, innovative curriculum design, occupational awareness and competency improvements, and the nurturing of soft skills.
Tan Tieniu shared insightful perspectives on topics such as quality teaching, adaptation to the digital age, collaboration between academia and industry, curriculum innovation, and the cultivation of soft skills.
He emphasized that "research-oriented universities should not only produce research outcomes but also cultivate talents." He highlighted Nanjing University's emphasis on teaching and talent cultivation, actively promoting the implementation of "integration of science and education." Tan Tieniu stressed the importance of "virtue" as the most crucial soft skill.
He also introduced Nanjing University's upcoming Artificial Intelligence General Education Core Courses (AIGECC) for all new students in the fall semester of 2024, as well as the "Dunxing Transcript," which records the participation of Nanjing University students in the educational projects focusing on morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and labor during their undergraduate studies.
