The Center for Studies of Marxist Social Theory (CSMST) at Nanjing University was founded in early 2005. It focuses its studies on the following three main areas:
Classic Marxist social theories
Marxist social development theories in modern China
Contemporary Marxist social critical theories abroad.
By integrating various perspectives from sociology, political science, history, and economics with Marxist philosophy, the center critically assesses the theoretical achievements of different social theories in the Marxian tradition in order to construct a Marxist social theory framework with Chinese characteristics that addresses the social changes and challenges of China’s modernization over the last four decades.
Over the last ten years, the center has established close cooperative relationships with a number of important international institutions in the field of Marxist studies, for example, the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam and the Russian State Archive of Socio-Political History (which has most of Marx and Engels’ original manuscripts), and Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften (which published the newest edition of Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe). The center also has close association with distinguished scholars in the field of Marxist studies and contemporary critical theories worldwide. Jacques Derrida, Slavoj Žižek, Catherine Malabou, Bernard Stiegler, and David Harvey are among the scholars who visited the center.
