From November 19th to 25th, Prof. Tan Tieniu, Academician of CAS and Secretary of the CPC NJU Committee, visited France and Germany with the NJU delegation for deepening scientific and educational cooperation and cultural exchanges with key partners.
Tan and the delegation visited universities such as Institut Polytechnique de Paris, Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (INALCO), Freie Universität Berlin, and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU), as well as research institutions such as Observatoire de Paris, Laboratory of the Physics of the two Infinities Irène Joliot-Curie (IJCLab), and Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB), and international organizations such as the International Council for Science (ICSU). During the visit, the delegation also met with a number of distinguished scholars.
Strengthening Cooperation with France and Broaden Channels for Cooperation and Exchange
On the morning of November 20th, the delegation visited the Institut Polytechnique de Paris and held a meeting with President Thierry Coulhon and Vice-President Elisabeth Crépon. Both universities agreed to further improve innovation based on previous cooperation, strengthen scientific research cooperation in the fields of nanomaterials, climate and environment, and life and health sciences. The two sides signed an MoU to expand cooperation in areas such as faculty and student exchange and joint educational programs.

On the afternoon of November 20th, the delegation visited Université Sorbonne Nouvelle. Tan held talks with President Daniel Mouchard and Vice-President for International Affairs Françoise Lavocat. The two sides conducted extensive discussions on strengthening academic exchanges, teaching cooperation, and joint training in the fields of language, literature, humanities and social sciences, and signed a cooperation framework agreement and a student exchange agreement.

On the evening of November 20th, the delegation held a discussion session in Paris at the Centre Culturel de Chine à Paris, to share NJU’s recent development progress. Senior and Young scholars as well as alumni representatives, from various sectors in France, attended the event.

On the morning of November 21st, the delegation visited the Observatoire de Paris. Prof. Tan met with Prof. Fabienne Casoli, the President, and other representatives. An MoU on cooperation in the field of astronomy and space sciences was signed by both parties during the meeting.

On the afternoon of November 21st, the delegation visited the INALCO. Tan held talks with President Jean-François Huchet and the Vice-President for International Affairs Gilles Forlot. Both sides reached a consensus on carrying out comprehensive and all-round cooperation within the framework of the China-France comprehensive strategic partnership, and will develop cooperation in the fields of linguistics, history, social sciences, and other areas.

On the afternoon of November 21st, the delegation visited the IJCLab and met with Director Achille Stocchi and professor representatives. Both sides agreed to expand scientific research cooperation in disciplines such as physics and astronomy.

On the morning of November 22nd, the delegation visited the ICSU and held talks with Senior Director Mathieu Denis. Both sides intended to fully leverage the strengths of NJU in the fields of artificial intelligence and climate change to jointly establish a cooperation platform for deeper personnel exchanges and promote cooperation in scientific governance and sustainable development.

Deepening Key Partnership with Germany to Address Global Challenges Together
On the morning of November 23rd, the delegation held an exchange meeting with a number of senior scholars and young scholars from Freie Universität Berlin, Charité Medical School and other institutions.

On the afternoon of November 23rd, Tan and the delegation visited Freie Universität Berlin, and met with President Günter Ziegler. Both sides reached a consensus on strengthening faculty exchanges in the fields of history, environment, and earth sciences, and promoting joint degree programs in the field of earth sciences.

On the afternoon of November 23rd, the delegation visited the HZB, where Associate Vice President Ding Aijun met with Director Bernd Rech. Both sides agreed to strengthen student and faculty exchanges and scientific research cooperation in the field of sustainable development.

On the morning of November 24th, Tan and the delegation visited the LMU and had in-depth discussions with President Bernd Huber and Vice President for Research Hans van Ess. Both sides acknowledged the cooperative achievements in talent cultivation and academic exchange between the two universities in recent years, and look forward to further leveraging the advantages of both universities to promote collaborative research on global key issues and work together to address common challenges faced by humanity.
