On March 17, Gong Qihuang, Academician of CAS and President of Peking University (PKU), led a delegation to visit NJU. Tan Tieniu, Academician of CAS and Secretary of CPC NJU Committee, and Lyu Jian, Academician of CAS and President of NJU, met the delegation. The two sides carried on an in-depth conversation on topics such as scientific research innovation, team building, and talent cultivation.

On behalf of NJU, Tan gave his welcome to Gong Qihuang and his delegation. He pointed out that the PKU and NJU have a long-standing history of communication and exchanges. Both universities aim to fulfill the earnest expectations of President Xi Jinping and are committed to rooting in the motherland, creating respectively “the Unique Peking University” and “the Unique Nanjing University,” and leading new practices and explorations in the development of higher education in China. Both sides should further strengthen cooperation and make new contributions to the construction of world-class universities with Chinese characteristics.

Lyu briefly introduced the developments in talent cultivation, educational reform, and scientific research at NJU. He hoped that the two universities can deepen exchanges, explore new areas of cooperation, jointly search for the “Chinese model” of higher education, and work together to find a new path for higher education in China and make new achievements.

Gong said in his reply that NJU and PKU have established a good foundation for cooperation over the years. The acceleration of building a powerful country in science and technology has put forward new requirements for the development of higher education in China. Gong hoped that the two universities will continue to join hands, forge ahead and contribute in science and technology to the construction of a powerful nation.

Later Gong and his delegation saw the exhibition “A Hundred and Twenty Years of Splendor, Ancestral Artworks at Nanjing University,” which features manuscripts and paintings of prominent modern intellectuals kept at the NJU.

Participations of the meeting also include Wang Bo and Sun Qingwei from PKU, Zou Yajun, Wang Zhenlin, and Chen Yunsong from NJU, Professor Chen Hongyuan, Academician of CAS, and personnel in charge of relevant departments at the two universities.
