Secretary Tan Tieniu met with President Lu Haitian, Executive Vice President Wang Manjian, and Secretary General Zhang Xiaosi of the Hong Kong NJU Alumni Association at Xianlin Campus on January 19.
Tan welcomed them back to their Alma Mater and expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Association for its role in uniting Hong Kong alumni, and providing recommendations and full support for NJU’s development. Over the past 120 years, NJU has achieved greatly by fostering virtue through education and building a rigorous and pragmatic academic environment, Tan said. However, the University faces challenges in its development, such as unbalanced development in different disciplines and the shortage of development resources.
Tan expressed to the Association his three hopes. First, the Association can try to tell NJU’s stories well. We can start by telling NJU’s stories well so that alumni can know about the University’s development and strengthen their emotional bond with their Alma Mater.
Second, the Association can help and promote exchanges and cooperation between NJU and universities and research institutions in Hong Kong. NJU is striving to achieve mutual employment of teachers, selection of courses, recognition of credits, and conferring of degrees. NJU has been trying hard on jointly training talents, running schools, and doing research to enhance NJU’s internationalized operation capacity.
Third, the Association can try to make use of its regional advantages and unite alumni in Hong Kong to raise funds for the University’s development. Tan wished that alumni in Hong Kong visited their Alma Mater more often, more Hong Kong entrepreneurs and universities cooperated with NJU, and more researchers in Hong Kong participated in the construction of NJU at Suzhou. At the end of his talk, Tan sent alumni in Hong Kong his Chinese New Year greetings.
Lu Haitian briefed Tan on the Hong Kong NJU Alumni Association. Lu said the Association elected its new members for the 8th council in 2022. Currently, over 1200 alumni are registered and more than 2000 alumni are in contact. Alumni in Hong Kong have paid much attention to the University-Wide Discussion. Alumni from all walks of life feel encouraged by the letter from Secretary Tan and are much grateful for his helping make the Association more influential in Hong Kong.
Lu said the Association would remember Secretary Tan’s advice and expectations and focus its efforts on developing Jiangsu-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance. By setting up alumni working funds and hiring full-time secretaries, it will fully support NJU and institutions in Hong Kong to cooperate and exchange ideas in faculty development, scientific research, and talent cultivation and contribute to NJU’s development.
Officials of the Alumni and Development Office of NJU were present at the meeting.
