A bite at Gulou

NJU’s Gulou campus, with its four-story school canteen as well as a variety of unique restaurants in the vicinity, is a wonderful place to find and enjoy delicious food.

For NJUers, eating at Gulou campus not only satisfies their appetite but also leaves them with many good memories.

Here are some unforgettable moments.

Xiang is a fresher at Yuxiu College. Although new to Nanjing, she often feels at home, finding many familiar cuisines in the school canteen. “They remind me of my mother’s cooking.” She also often visits the “Meals on Wheels” mobile food truck for takeaways. But in most cases, she prefers to eat with her three roommates. “They are all very nice. We often take classes and have meals together.”

Zuo at Jianxiong College is from distant Tianjin but has quickly got accustomed to the cuisines of Nanjing. “I want to seize the opportunity to enjoy different sceneries and taste different foods.” His favorite is the clay-pot stew dish in the school canteen. “It’s cheap and filling. Perfect!”

Cao is a third-year undergraduate in the School of Software. The canteen has accompanied him on every full-schedule day. “Wonton for breakfast, refreshing dishes for lunch, and a sauce-dripping egg pancake for supper.” He is particular impressed with the scene of the cooks making dumplings. “To save time, each of them is responsible for one process, such as making the filling, kneading the dough, wrapping the dumplings, and cooking the dumplings. Their excellent cooperation has taught me a lot.”

Zhao is an alumnus of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning. He left Nanjing for his job in Suzhou half a year ago. During the Wechat interview for this piece, he makes it very clear how he misses cuisine at and around Gulou campus. “Once I worked until 5 a.m. in the morning. I can still vividly remember the sweet flavor of the pie I bought for breakfast that day.”

Yang is a second-year graduate student at the Business School. The canteen has accompanied him in the preparation for the qualifying examination for Ph.D. candidates. “It witnessed every bit of progress I made.”

Zhao is another second-year graduate student at Business School. Although her current internship is at a company far away from Gulou, she always prefers to come back to the campus for dinner with her friends. “Having meals with my friends has become an indispensable part of my life.”

Du is a graduate student at the Law School. She said that last May, some of her very best friends got together, had a great meal in Sichuan restaurant in a small alley in Nanxiucun, and walked back to sit in the moonlight on the lawn in front of the North Building. “It’s so nice to meet them again, have a feast together and remember the past times.”

Gao is a second-year graduate student at the Medical School and has stayed at Gulou campus for four years. “Among all the choices, stir-fired spicy pot is my favorite.”
