Exhibition and forum on publishing held at NJU

On April 8, the opening ceremony of Exhibition Learning to Make Books at NJU: The Business of Publishing and high-level forum on the cultivation and training of talents in the field of publishing was held at NJU Gulou campus. The events were hosted by the School of Information Management, NJU and co-organized by NJU Libraries and the NJU Publishing Research Institute. Kan Ninghui, President of Shanghai Century Publishing Group, and Xue Hailin, Deputy Secretary of the CPC NJU Committee, attended the ceremony.

Xue reviewed the development of publishing as an academic discipline at NJU. He pointed out that since it was approved in 2010, the master program of Publishing at NJU contributed to the cause of “building China's strength in publication” and cultivated outstanding talents. In 2022, the program achieved excellent results in the national evaluation. NJU’s undergraduate program in Editing and Publishing has been selected as a national first-class undergraduate program. The NJU Publishing Research Institute is included in the high-quality construction plan of the publishing think tank of the National Press and Publication Administration.

On behalf of the publishing units in the Yangtze River Delta Region, Kan expressed his respect and gratitude to the NJU Publishing Research Institute and Department of Publishing for their achievements in discipline construction and talent cultivation, and warmly invited NJU students to become readers, authors and editors of the publishing industry.

During the event, Xue Hailin and Sun Zhenfu, Deputy Director of the Budget Work Committee of the Provincial People's Congress of Jiangsu and Former Chairman of Jiangsu Phoenix Publishing Group, unveiled the work-presentation exhibition. The opening ceremony of the event was presided over by Professor Jiang Yingchun, Secretary of the CPC Committee of the School of Information Management.

The high-level forum on “Publication Editing and Production” was held on the same day. Professor Wu Yan from the Department of Publishing Science, School of Information Management, NJU, shared his teaching methodologies for the course “Publication Editing and Production” and showed how he leads students to personally participate in the entire editing and publishing workflow. Frontline experts in the industry, together with teachers and students from NJU actively engaged in in-depth dialogues. The forum was presided over by Professor Zhang Zhiqiang, Executive Vice Dean of NJU Publishing Research Institute and Director of the Publishing Science Department of the School of Information Management.

This exhibition was jointly planned by Professor Zhang Zhiqiang and Professor Wu Yan. The exhibits include a total of 46 published works produced by current students as well as graduates from the master program in the past three years. The works are of a wide selection of topics and forms. Some are also presented in the form of digital publication, audiobooks, and/or subscription fees, while others are accompanied by canvas bags, postcards, notebooks and other souvenirs. This exhibition shows the extraordinary innovative power of NJU students in the master program in Publishing and provides a wonderful window into publishing as a discipline at NJU.

The exhibition will last until July 8, 2023.
