There should be more economic and cultural exchanges between China and America and more American students should come to study in China, said Max Baucus, US ambassador to China,when he shared his opinions on the Sino-US relations during his visit to Nanjing University’s Center for Chinese and American Studies on October 13.

Baucus said he was impressed by the center and wished the success of its future.

It is lucky for students to study in here, so they should not only make full use of rich resources here but also remember to make contributions to society, said Baucus in his lecture.

Students should act bravely, learn more about the differences between China and other regions in the world and fulfill the value of their life by serving others, he said.

Baucus himself set the target of engaging in public services during his travel overseas, he told the students.

The negative attitude towards China during the election campaign is not an obstacle to Sino-US relations in the long term, Baucus quoted Deng Xiaoping whenasked during the Q&A session why both US Presidential candidates show an unfriendly attitude towards China.

As for whether TPP and AIIB will hinder the US-China economic cooperation, he said that TPP has set a higher standard of free trade than WTO and Americawelcomesany countries,including China,if they meet the TPP standard. He did not say anything about AIIB. Besides, Baucus expressed his optimism about the Sino-US bilateral investment agreement, which is under negotiation, and the future cooperation of the two countries in energy, environment and human rights.

Baucus has been the ambassador to China since February 21, 2014. From 1978 to 2013, he worked as a Senator. With rich experience in international trade, he worked as the chair of the Senate Finance Committee and when he was the chair, the committee passed free trade agreements with 11 countries.

What’ more, he played an important role in the Congress’ decisionto establish the permanent normal trade relationship with China in 2000, and he gave support to China during China’s entry into WTO in 2001.
